The Science

L-Tyrosine is a non essential amino acid synthesised endogenously from phenylalanine. It serves as the precursor for the catecholamine pathway: tyrosine is hydroxylated to L-DOPA by tyrosine hydroxylase, which is then decarboxylated to dopamine. Dopamine is subsequently converted to noradrenaline and then adrenaline.

Under conditions of acute stress or sustained cognitive load, catecholamine turnover increases and available tyrosine can become a rate limiting factor. Supplementation has been studied for its role in maintaining cognitive performance under these conditions.
